Before I started any work in HR, I read an article about Aung San Suu Kyi in the PARADE magazine distributed with the Sunday issue of my local newspaper. I kept that article with me as I went through college and entered the real world.
The most intriguing thing about that article was the photo featured on the cover of the magazine. In that photo, Aung San Suu Kyi was shown speaking to a crowd of people standing high above the gate of her home. How can someone have the strength to continue the struggle of her people while being closely watched by her enemies? Soon after that photo was taken, she was taken back to house arrest again. By now, she has spent more than 10 of the past 17 years in house arrest or sent to prison by the Burma’s ruling military junta.
The latest round of house arrest is more restrictive than ever. There is rarely any news about her. However, a UN official was allowed a meeting with her earlier today and there was even a photo of her with the official.
