WANBefore Gao Qinsheng accepted an award on behalf of her son Shi Tao last week, his name was added to the lawsuit against Yahoo! filed by the World Organization for Human Rights USA. Since then, she has been speaking out more publicly about Yahoo! than ever. But it has not made enough impact on the proposals for setting up a board committee on human rights and opposing internet repression at the company’s shareholder meeting today. I am still encouraged by the 15% of support for the anti-repression proposal. In contrast, the other proposal received only 4% of the votes. I think the media attention garnered by the lawsuit is working. And for Yahoo! to release a statement condemning the imprisonment of internet users in China, the company appears to feel the pressure.
