In early September, a group of Tibetan children were detained after graffiti of pro-Tibetan independence slogans appeared on several buildings in Gansu province. AI confirmed that seven teenage boys were detained for more than two days. Police demanded money from the families for the release of the boys. Two boys were released when payment was made. The family of another boy also paid the police so that the boy would be allowed to go to a hospital for treatment of head injuries suffered while in detention. The remaining four boys remained in custody and electric prods were reportedly used on them.
